I went hunting with Alpine Outfitters in Grande Prairie, Alberta, where I took this nice black timberwolf. They put the remains of cows and pigs through a wood chipper with a 10-inch auger and grind it into bone marrow dog food. We set-up in blinds and waited for the wolves to hit the bait piles, which they usually do in the dark. Sooner than later, a wolf makes a mistake and comes back in the daytime for a little snack, presenting an opportunity for a shot. Most shots are 200-300 yards. They recommend ballistic tip bullets to put the animal down quick. These wolves can run forever when they’re wounded.
The rooms were nice and the food was great. We flew from Minneapolis to Calgary on Northwest Airlines and then Air Canada took us to Grande Prairie. In Canada, you need to keep your bullets in a different bag than the one with your firearm, and they put stickers all over it. Air Canada also charges a $25 firearm transfer fee each way. This fee seems a little ridiculous, as it is just baggage.
I am definitely going to continue to hunt wolves in the future. There is nothing better than hearing the pack in the woods howling all around you. The adrenaline really gets moving. I think once you do this hunt you will be hooked on chasing wolves.
