My son Zack and I went on an antelope hunt in northwest Colorado in August 2008. We hunted with Elkhorn Outfitters of Craig, Colo. I arranged this trip through Cabela’s Adventures, and the property we hunted on was a Ranching for Wildlife outfit. This means that through an agreement with Colorado, they open their land for limited public hunting. In return they are able to have guaranteed landowner tags and can set their own seasons. They have antelope, mule deer and elk on this ranch. They control more than 100,000 acres. This was a first-class operation, with very professional guides, cooks and accommodations. And to top it all off, the amount of wildlife that we saw was incredible.

My son and I each shot a buck antelope, and we had them mounted by the outfitter’s affiliated taxidermist. The terrain was rolling hills and mostly sage covered hills with pastures and fields mixed in. The hunt consisted of driving the country, spotting animals, and then stalking on foot. I would highly recommend antelope hunting for young hunters. There are lots of them, and there’s almost always something happening. If you’re thinking of taking a young hunter on his or her first antelope hunt, Elkhorn is a great outfitter!
